Blazingstar Music is owned and operated by Mary Kirkwood and offers Baby and Me, Group Music , Body Percussion, Piano Lessons and Piano Camp. Mary has two awesome sons of her own. They both enjoy participating in music activities. Mary feels very strongly that music is an integral part of every child's life and should be accessible to all. She also has two pets, Star and Kitty Kat.
Mary has a Bachelor of Music Education from Brandon University, 1988, and has completed Kodaly Level 1 at Brandon University in 1990 and Orff Level 2 at the University of Manitoba in 2009.
In addition to that she studied Jazz Orff, at the University of Manitoba with International Orff Educator Doug Goodkin in 2009 as well as Body Percussion with Keith Terry at the San Francisco School, in San Francisco, California in 2013.
The French horn was my major instrument while attending Brandon University. For four years out of the five-year program, I studied with William Gordon. In the fourth year of my program, when he was on sabbatical I studied with Allan Ehnes. Both influenced me with their interpersonal skills as teachers as well as being advocates of excellent aural musicianship and musicality.
The piano was my minor instrument. I studied with Dr. Ken Nichols. He influenced me with the flexibility in his teaching style by allowing me, for example, to learn how to read a jazz chart and play from one, for one of my juries. I also enjoyed his creativity with chords and willingness to let me be the composer with my piano accompaniments. This is a skill that I have found to be very useful as an early years music educator. I also have used this skill when accompanying the children’s choir, the “Sonbeams”, directed by Jane Burpee, at Oak Bank United Church, in Oakbank, Manitoba.
I have enjoyed many years of Music teaching in a variety of different schools in Thompson, Winnipeg and outlying areas. One thing I notice where ever I teach is the abundant talent amongst the students. I very much enjoy drawing that talent from the students. In Thompson, I participated in Music Teacher Concerts, (with solo work on the French horn). I also played French horn and trumpet in a band called Generic Jazz. My band students participated at the Brandon University Jazz Festival and my elementary music students participated at the Norman Regional Choral Workshop. Over the years I have been a member of MMEA, MBA and MOC. I took part in MMEA Sag conferences when it was possible for me to make the eight-hour trip to Winnipeg. I very much enjoyed the opportunity to take part in music workshops in Thompson whenever that was possible. In the spring of 2005, Joan Linklater provided music teachers in Thompson with an Orff workshop. This workshop sparked my interest in Orff.
In the summer 2005, I took Orff Level 1 at the University of Manitoba. I have thought many times since, “I should have done this a long time ago.” In all of the years of my teaching, I found the Orff method to suit my desire to teach toward a creative musical experience while at the same time making conscious musical literacy. I find the Orff philosophy, of teaching to the child, put simply, quite an appealing and enjoyable approach that is effective and touches on the affective. Having taught for many years in inner city schools I am also impressed with Orff Music for Children being accessible to all. It is impressive in our ever-increasing technological world, that all a child needs to participate, is their voice. Of course, all of the teachers were fantastic, but I was most influenced by Joan Linklater’ s calm, creative musicality and her ability to inspire level one Orff students with wonderful ways of teaching children. I have been an active member of the Manitoba Orff Chapter since the fall of 2005.
Shortly after taking this course, I decided to move to southern Manitoba to be closer to the southern Manitoba music and arts world. On March 2, 2009, after investing in a complete set of Orff Instruments, I opened the doors to Blazingstar Music. Carl Orff compared the Orff Schulwerk to a wildflower saying, “It is an experience of long standing that wild flowers always prosper…”. The blazingstar is a hardy and vibrant wildflower of North America.
Life has been busy and good since March 2, 2009. In July of 2009 I studied with Marcelline Moody, Jewel Casselman, Diane Sjoberg and Carolyn Boyes at the University of Manitoba where I attained Orff Level Two! In August of the same year I participated in Jazz Orff, with International Music Educator Doug Goodkin, (also at the University of Manitoba). During Doug’s wonderful course I learned about Keith Terry, one of his colleagues. Keith Terry is a Body Percussionist from Oakland, California. In 2012 I had the opportunity to work at Constable Edward Finney school in Winnipeg Manitoba. At this time Gary Jackson was the principal and he encouraged creativity. At that time, teaching at Finney was like teaching in a Reggio Emelia Arts School. This is where I learned about Music Explorations. In 2013, I studied with Keith Terry at the San Francisco School, in San Francisco, California. Along with taking courses, I have enjoyed teaching Early Years Music at a variety of schools in Selkirk and Winnipeg. I have also thoroughly enjoyed the many students of all ages that I have taught at Blazingstar Music. Best, Mary
Mary's philosophy of Music Education is inspired by the Orff process, the Kodaly process, the Love of Jazz, Body Percussion and the Reggio Emelia process. Music Explorations is an idea that comes from the Reggio Emelia Process.
During group music classes the children will have the opportunity to explore the environment of the music room. This starts with a mini lesson about an element of music that we are learning. This is followed by an invitation to work on that idea, or to explore the many different instruments or other possible activities in the music room. Children come up with their own projects and often collaborate with their friends. The real excitement occurs at the end of the class when the children share something that they have learned. Music Explorations activities often become wonderful performances.

This is me with Doug Goodkin at The SanFrancisco School in San Francisco, California. This is in July of 2013 when I went to his school to study with Keith Terry. I was so glad that I had the time to say hello to Doug as well.
I had so much fun studying with Keith Terry. This is a picture of me with Keith in July of 2013 when I took his Body Percussion course.
I thoroughly enjoyed studying the French horn with William Gordon as well as playing in the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble that were directed by him at Brandon University!
I enjoyed the creativity that Ken Nichols shared in his piano lessons with me at Brandon University.
Dr. Wayne Bowman was my Jazz Band Instructor at Brandon Univeristy. It was super exciting to play the French horn in his ensembles.
